Introduction

This tutorial is a project overview for my image “Little girl with the clouds”. This image is a personal project and I can say I made it just for fun. İn this tutorial I will not go in detail explanation, assuming that reader has some basic knowledge of photoshop brushes and some drawing skills and some colours. For this tutorial I will be using Adobe Photoshop . I will also be using techniques and methods that I feel most comfortable with when coloring. I suggest that after following this tutorial, you find out what works best for you.

Concept

The concept is about a little cartoon girl character who is annoyed by her cargo. The first step, which is the most important step, is composing the concept and making the best sketch to start painting.

STEP 1: Sketch

I always start off with a sketch for my concept work. So, I began by thinking about the figure of the girl and sketched several different views.

I made some color sketches to capture the idea of what she would look like. I worked on the character’s cloth first.

STEP 2: Colouring Background

After the sketching was done, I started to try some colours for the background.

Here I separated 4 layers: the first is for the character, the second is for her car and pencils, the third is for the background, and the fourth for the clouds. In case I am not satisfied with the colour and want to change anything I can make some changes with the help of these layers.

STEP 3: Colouring Character

For the character I started with filling the general lines and giving them dimensions. Due to the direction of light, the shadows are fixed. The light is from a cloudy and a little daylight, so there wouldn’t be a clear shining light, but some vivid colours

STEP 4: Colouring Background

I started to paint the background first. In this step, I knew I wanted my background to look cloudy, with some white and grey big clouds.
For the pencils colour I tried lots of blue, red green colours. Here I worked out the general look that I was aiming for.


Here is the result. Since I already decided upon the colours, now I can start to add details.
